Substantial pain on the outside of my knee when extending lower leg and knee buckling.

Hey everyone. I started having knee pain a few months ago on my knee on the far outside of the joint parallel with my kneecap.

Just in the last few weeks it's gotten substantially worse and my knee won't straighten out entirely. If my knee is slightly bent with weight on that leg it will give out. I also wasn't able to clip my ski boot into my binding recently since my left leg wasn't able to make the motion to push my heel straight down.

I noticed the pain much more after running on a treadmill at an incline.

I've been an athlete my whole life and had my share of knee pain (chronic patellar tendinitis) but nothing compared to the severity of this.

Stats:
-24 yrs old
-Caucasian
-6'1"
-260 lbs
-male

Thanks so much in advance. I have an appointment to get it looked at and probably an MRI at the end of the month, I just want to get a better idea of what I might be up against.

Bursitis vs Breakdown of cartilage around the knee. It's very common among runners. You need the MRI to make any definitive diagnosis, but keep off the knee for a bit.
