My gum is swollen around one of my wisdom teeth.

Hello. First time posting in this subreddit.

Both of my top wisdom teeth have already come in, but one of my lower ones seems to be causing the gum around it to swell. We don't really have the money to get them removed, so I wanted to know what I can do now to reduce the swelling and reduce the soreness.

Thank you!

Not a doc, but some things that might help:

Anything astringent will reduce the inflammation a little bit, but I don't know whether or not that would have any effect on the pain. Tom's of Maine's mouthwashes have witch hazel in them, which is a mild astringent.

Eugenol is a natural oral anesthetic, and in fact I think it was used as such before modern oral anesthetics were developed. This is the main chemical in clove oil. Lavoris mouthwash, (the red cinnamon kind, dollar tree stores and the like tend to carry it, it's made in canada) has some eugenol in it I believe. If you can get oil of cloves you could dab it on the area. Alternatively, you could just suck or chew on some whole cloves.

If you find yourself in a position to obtain dental insurance, do so asap; a lot of dental carriers will make you wait and pay your monthly premium for 6 to 12 months before they'll pay for something like an extraction or oral surgery, depending on what you'll need to treat the tooth. I learned this to my dismay recently due to suffering an issue similar to your own. Good luck.
