Knee pain from bent position only

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a booth at a restaurant, and when I went to get up, I felt a sudden pain in the center of my kneecap, like my knee couldn't support my weight (my weight is average). I can still walk, run, and even sprint with no knee pain, but when I start in a bent position (such as at the bottom of a squat or a basketball jump shot) and push off I still experience varying degrees of pain. Most of the time I can tolerate the pain, but I'm a very active person, and wouldn't want to be sidelined with a more severe injury. Are there any exercises or stretches to help rehab my knee?

You should get an MRI of the knee first to make sure that it's not something that needs to be fixed surgically before it's too late to fix the problem.
