College Graduates Often Unaware They Are No Longer Covered by Parents' Health Insurance
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) June 18, 2008 -- As thousands of college graduates receive their diplomas and pack their bags in preparation for the next phase of their life, they may be unaware that they may no longer be eligible for coverage under their parents' health insurance plans. In response to the need for health insurance coverage for new graduates, Health Plan Administrators, Inc. (HPA), a member of the Independence Holding Company (IHC) Group and a leading marketer and administrator of short-term health insurance plans, recently introduced an online video and a very accessible online application and enrollment process for college graduates.
"College graduation is a time of great joy and celebration for more than 1.5 million young adults each year," said Jim Kenneally, chief sales and marketing officer for HPA. "However, when children graduate from college, they are often no longer covered under their parents' health insurance plans. This poses a challenge for new grads, many of whom need coverage to get them through the summer months until they begin a new job. Once they obtain employment, some may have to wait additional months before being eligible to enroll in their employer's health plan."
To help combat the confusion regarding health insurance, HPA has developed an educational video--"Crazy College Grads Need Health Insurance"--and posted it on Web sites such as YouTube. The humorous yet educational video, constructed from actual interviews with college students, highlights the uncertainty of college students regarding their health insurance benefits and the cost of medical expenses. At the end of the video, viewers are directed to www.protectyourgrad.com for additional information.
Kenneally added, "The protectyourgrad.com site was developed specifically to simplify the maze of obtaining health insurance for a graduating student. Short-term health insurance provides parents and their college graduates with the peace of mind that the graduates are insured for basic major medical expenses at a price that is less expensive than COBRA continuation coverage under the parents' health plan or purchasing other individual major medical health insurance. Potential insureds can obtain pricing information, answer qualifying health-related questions, secure payment, and receive a temporary ID card in as little as five minutes."
Short-term health insurance (STM) plans are designed to meet the needs of college students who are no longer covered by their parents' policy, serving as a bridge between graduation day and employer-provided health insurance. *Short-term health insurance covers an individual's basic health services such as doctor visits, emergencies, surgery, and out-patient and in-patient care. Coverage may be purchased for a period as short as one month or for a period as long as one year. Coverage begins as early as the next day following receipt of an application via the Internet, subject to approval of the application. (Some states may allow only a six-month maximum coverage period; other exclusions and limitations apply.)
* STM does not cover pre-existing health conditions, and individuals with certain health conditions may not be eligible for the coverage. For this reason, COBRA or individual major medical insurance coverage is typically more appropriate for individuals who have pre-existing health conditions or other serious health issues.
